Rio de Janeiro Means "River of January", so named by the explorers who first discovered the Rio harbor in the month of January. It is both the name of the city and state. The city is famous for the hotel-lined tourist beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, for the world famous giant statue of Jesus called Christ the Redeemer ("Cristo Redentor") on the Corcovado mountain, and for its yearly Carnival celebration.
Cariocas A term that the citizens of Rio call themselves, whether or not they are native to the city (much like a Yankee becomes a Cajun after a few years living here and eating the food!)
Ipanema Famous beach in Rio where the bossa nova originated and nightlife flourishes
Copacabana Famous beach in Rio where 2 million people gather for New Year's Eve every year
Flamengo The cultural center of Rio
Espirito Spirit
Partido Party
A vida boa The good life

Once you get your Portuguese down, you will find your self translating English phrases into Portuguese, like:

Como são seus mãe e? "How's ya Mom an' dem?"
Feijoada? Parece jambalaya pra mim! "Feijoda? Looks like jambalaya to me!"
Jogue-me algo, senhor! "Throw me somethin', mista!"
Onde está o banheiro neste flutuador? "Where's the bathroom on this float?"
Granizam o rei e a rainha de Rio! "Hail the Rio King and Queen!"
Meu, que grânulos fantásticos você tem! "My, what fantastic beads you have!"
Nosso flutuador melhor do que seu flutuador. "Our float's better than y'all's float!"
Menina, voce esta maravilhosa! "Girl, you look marvelous!"
Se acabar meus granulos, posso jogar os seus? ( the one running outta beads) "If I run outta beads, can I throw some of yours?"
Como você diz Margarita em Potuguese? "How do you say Margarita in Portuguese?"
Eu nunca vi-o dançar como aquele! "I've never seen him dance like that!"
