The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio was formed in Lafayette, Louisiana in 2005 by eleven Mardi Gras-loving friends, all of whom were well seasoned in staging Mardi Gras madness in the Acadiana area. The founding members were Elaine Bernhard, Kenny Bernhard, Cindy Comeaux, Larry Comeaux, Howard DeRouen, Tina DeRouen, Charla Gail Glod, Walter Glod, Don Landry, Rebecca Landry and Ted Viator. Invitations were sent out to friends and relatives to become one of the 495 charter members of this new krewe. A "Rio de Janeiro" theme was chosen for all the opportunities it would present for eye-popping costumes, heart-pounding music and fantastico Latin-style fun.
In the krewe's first year, it held three major events: a Brazilian Sambada in the fall, its Rio Ball in early January and the exciting Rio Parada ten days before Mardi Gras. The krewe has added a fourth event, a "Spring Rodizio". That's right, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian barbecue, with a little Cajun thrown in!!!
Our fourth year is complete. We are now 630 members strong...and counting. We have 20 terrific krewe owned floats that are housed in our own "Flutuador Den" (Float Den) that was purchased this year. The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio is moving at a fast pace and Acadiana is keeping up with us!!
